Huperzia collection in Australia
« on: November 05, 2009, 07:49:03 am »
Hello, I am Ashley Field, I am a botanist from Queensland Australia and I keep a research collection of Huperzia. I am starting this thread to post pictures of some of the plants in my collection. I would love to hear from other collectors about the types they grow and how they grow them. I am also happy to exchange for new material for my collection.

The first picture is of one of my favourite Huperzia clones- it is a collection of Huperzia phlegmarioides from Papua New Guinea. This collection is very rare in Australia. Huperzia phlegmarioides is a species that grows in Melanesia (from the Maluku Islands in Indonesia eastward to Fiji and south to Australia).

have fun growing Huperzia

Third photo is a close up of the strobilus of Huperzia tetrastichoides Field AR. and Bostock, a species that I named last year which may be endemic to Australia. We used to call this species Huperzia prolifera which really comes from Indonesia. Have you seen this species collected elsewhere?

Thanks Sutthisak- I will start another thread for Australian ferns as well!
This is a Huperzia phlegmaria from Queensland, we call this one a 'black stem' because the stems are darker than the other two types of Huperzia phlegmaria.

This is Huperzia foliosa from Fiji, it is related to H. squarrosa but has square tassels.

This is a Huperzia from highland New Brittain. It may be Huperzia verticellata. It is not easy to grow so I grow this species near cooling pads.

Hi Ash;
Welcome to Iloveferns forum.  /05 thanks for sharing very nice photos.
Huperzia tetrastichoides Field AR. and Bostock .  this species have never found in the wild of Thailand, all that growing in here have imported from AUS. the name on the label attached with the plants still be H. prolifera QLD bootlace.  how's another one H. prolifera Cork screw Bootlace? this species still does not change the name, right?
I'm looking forward seeing your other Huperzia.  +*-

Hi Wanna,
It is a great forum  :)

All of the plants we call 'Bootlace' or 'Corkscrew' here in Australia are now Huperzia tetrastichoides, if you have a look closely  m193 it has four sided shoots. We have used Huperzia prolifera incorrectly for many years and it appears on our labels as Huperzia prolifera. Huperzia prolifera is a beautiful similar species from Asia. Sutthisak has it on his webpage as 'Indonesian sp.'.

For a growing medium I use tree bark nuggets, (pine, cork, raintree) and soemtimes charcoal or fern roots.  I sieve the pieces so that they are between the size of a thumbnail and little fingernail. I fertilize with one of the following- seawead solution, fish emulsion, nutricote, magamp, calcium nitrate or GF9 and I only use dilute fertilizer and apply ever two to four weeks.

regards
Ashley
