* Plant Guide *
« on: February 10, 2010, 10:50:42 am »
Hi all  1/39

I would like to ask what do you think if we have a pinned plant guide for those who are newbies to specific ferns but interested to get started and have only bits and pieces of information.  These will cover things like a comprehensive guide on how to grow, what kind of condition that suits each plant and what pests to look out etc. Then this forum can be very informative and fun for all.

Looking forward to hear your comments.   1/13

it's very good idea and will be good for new growers.  8)

any special reason why i see some of the platycerium over here are planted in a pot instead of mounting them on a fern bark?  ???
does it makes the form of the platycerium look nicer when the shield fronds grow & cover the pot?  05-_

(pls see the following thread)

tks.

From the thread you mentioned, I assume you mean P.elephantotis.  For me, a major reason to plant platycerium in pot or mounting on board, it is up

to their forms.   Some look nicer when planted in pot but in general you can plant them in both ways.  Wait for a comment from other members. 1/39

Matt,
you should try to do something for change. you can start with Platycerium which upright fertile fronds such as  P.Panama, P.alcicorne africa form or madagascar form. these specimens will be nice when plant in pot.

Hi, I just found this forum :)

Since I live in Bkk, I'm looking for places to buy ferns - especially interesting, special and unusual ones.  I have some purchased in Chatuchak - at the Wed/Thursday market.  They have a good selection!  I just want to know if there are other places too?

Thanks,
Jay

Thank you, khun Wanna  1e2

I will try to go and visit your place in Chantaburi some day.  How far is it by car from Bangkok (Sukhumvit)?

I see you have a lot of Platycerium, Huperiza, etc.
What are your favourites?  Plat?

It is 250 km or around 3 hours from BKK. My favorite ferns are Platycerium and Huperzia.  1/13  how about you?
p.s. are you not Thai?

Thank you.
No....not Thai, Scandinavian.
But lived and worked in Krungtheep for many years.

I am educated as botanist, but haven't worked in this area.    8)

Have a small garden in Sukhumvit, and like especially epiphytes, ferns, palms.
Well....I like Ophioglossum, and smallish ferns like Psilotium and LARGE tree ferns (Dicksonia, Cyathea, etc)
I am trying epiphytes such as Platy and Drynaria.
Let's see how it goes.   1/37

I'd love to visit your place.  Let's see when I can make it.  ;)

I also like Cyathea sp. I killed them a lot before. m048  for now I can keep a couple of Cyathea gigantea at my nursery. They are quite hard to grow.

I visited the plant fair at the Rama IX park in the beginning of December.  I suppose it's a yearly event.  Lots of interesting plants!  I got some nice ferns as well as palms.

Most interesting for me perhaps a multi-stem Dickinsonia.  Without a main trunk.  The seller said Dickinsonia, though it may be another genus.  From NZ, he said.  Looking forward going back next year.
