Platycerium Mt lewis Forms
« on: January 15, 2011, 10:05:32 pm »
I am going to post all the forms of P. mt lewis here.  In the USA there are a few forms in cultivation.  1.Standard form has normal shield with Medium size fertile fronds.  2. Standard form but with wide shields 3. Wide fertile fronds 4. Two form of thin fertile fronds.

I like the Thin fertile frond the best.

I have not see any DNA work done on this plant so I cant say if it is a true species or not.  The original plants where collected on Mt lewis AUS.  Seams to be a sport of Platycerium willinckii.

Easy to grow, removing pups should be done when the pups are larger.  The roots do not develop as deep on young plants.

If interested contact platyceriumferns@gmail.com or Just ask wanna if she has them......  Pot your photos of your P. Mt lewis here I'd like to see the forms you have.

Platycerium 'Mount Lewis' grows at high altitude on the Atherton Tablelands and Main Coast Range. That might be why it likes cool weather. It is much more widespread than just on Mount Lewis - but that is where the common name came from. It is variably in the wild. Attached is a picture of a short frond form from the crest of Mount Lewis. Ash

Ashley I must say that we do grow them here in Hot climates.  LA,TX,Fl.  Where the summer temps are like 100 deg.  And they all do well.  The thin form grows outside in FL all year long.  HOT and COLD.
